KateChopin(1850–1904)wasanAmericanauthorofshortstoriesandnovelsbasedinLouisiana.SheisnowconsideredbysomescholarstohavebeenaforerunnerofAmerican20th-centuryfeministauthorsofSouthernorCatholicbackground,suchasZeldaFitzgerald.TheAwakeningwasfirstpublishedin1899.SetinNewOrleansandontheLouisianaGulfcoastattheendofthe19thcentury.Itiswidelyseenasalandmarkworkofearlyfeminism,generatingamixedreactionfromcontemporaryreadersandcritics.Thenovel'sblendofrealisticnarrative,incisivesocialcommentary,andpsychologicalcomplexitymakesTheAwakeningaprecursorofAmericanmodernistliterature;itprefigurestheworksofAmericannovelistssuchasWilliamFaulknerandErnestHemingwayandechoestheworksofcontemporariessuchasEdithWhartonandHenryJames.ChopindidnotwriteanothernovelafterTheAwakeningandhaddifficultypublishingstoriesafteritsrelease.Whenshediedfiveyearslater,shewasonherwaytobeingforgotten.In1960sPerSeyersted,aNorwegianliteraryscholarrediscoveredChopin,leadingTheAwakeningtoberememberedasthefeministfictionitistoday.
